The right to choose your own smash repairer is not an automatic legal right. In NSW and across Australia, whether you can nominate your own repairer depends entirely on the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) of your specific car insurance policy — not on a blanket rule under Australian Consumer Law.
Some policies allow you to nominate a repairer. Others direct you to the insurer's own network. The only way to know is to read your PDS or call your insurer directly before you commit to a repairer.
